Personal Belongings

If you were unable to collect personal items from your locker during the designated clean out in April or by appointment during the past three months, please stop by the school during the week of August 3-7 to claim your belongings. All items that are left after August 7 will be donated to charity.

9th Grade Summer Reading

Parents of Ninth-Grade Students,

Due to the potentially controversial nature of this year’s suggested summer reading book, The Hate U Give, GW would like to offer an alternative reading suggestion for parents and students. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, offers some of the same important ideas and themes found in The Hate U Give. While serving as an alternative reading assignment, it will still allow for student participation in class discussions and thematic writing assignments. Classwork and assessments, for either novel, will be comparable in length and difficulty, and they will address the same content standards. Walkie Talkies

This school year, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) fund raised for walkie- talkies to help the administration, teachers, and staff communicate better and provide quick communication in a crisis. We are pleased to announced that we have successfully purchased the walkie-talkies! We would like to thank everyone for their donations, and we are excited to know the walkie- talkies will be ready for use when we return to school.

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent to the parents and guardians of our students on May 27. Included in the packet will be summer reading assignments, as well as information concerning summer school for remediation. Please contact either Mr. Moyers or Mrs. Williams for additional questions.

P-EBT Cards

Parents, Please make sure you have your child confirm addresses (and phone numbers) to the home base teacher. We must know that our students’ primary guardian address is correct in WVEIS so that they receive information on the P-EBT card being offered by the state. We know that so many of our families need this benefit. As a school system, we can only try and do the best we can.

As a reminder, WVDE has provided an FAQ and contact information at: https://wvde.us/covid19/wv-pebt/. This card is being administered by the state, not by KCS. SNAP families will begin to see the benefit this month. Non-SNAP families will receive their cards in June.

FAQs

Do seniors qualify for the benefit?

Yes, seniors will still receive the benefit even if they graduate this month.

Do PreK students qualify for the benefit?

Yes, PreK students qualify.

What if I’ve moved to Kanawha County, but haven’t yet enrolled my student?

We are only able to update and share information for currently enrolled KCS students.

Custody Situations and Requests

KCS has been asked to confirm the address on file for the current primary guardian in WVEIS. The only exception is if you are in a SNAP household. Because DHHR already has information in their system for these students, the P-EBT card will go to the parent on file with DHHR/SNAP.

What if my student is in a 50/50 custody agreement?

The current primary guardian in WVEIS will receive information about the benefit. They should share this information with the other parent or guardian and form their own plan on how to share the benefit.

What if my student’s custody situation has changed since the school system shut down for COVID-19?

KCS is only confirming the address for the current primary guardian in WVEIS at this time. We are unable to make any changes to the primary guardian listed.

Juuls

Parents, a recent trend among middle school students is called juuls, which is a new type of e-cigarette. Please refer to the Nurse’s Notes to find out more about this alarming trend and what to look for to see if your child may be at risk. Student Immunization

New this year, seventh grade students must have a well-child physical and dental exam in addition to the immunizations.

According to state law, no student is to enter school without written documentation (month, day and year) for each dose of required immunization as given below: DTaP –Four (4) doses required, the last dose must be received on or after the 4^thbirthday.

(DT may be accepted if a medical excuse is signed by a physician or if the student is seven years of age or older)

Polio — Three (3) doses required, the last dose received on or after the 4^thbirthday.

Measles (Rubeola), Mumps and Rubella (MMR) – Two doses, first dose received after the first birthday.

Varicella –– Two doses, first dose received after the first birthday.

Hepatitis B — Three doses, last dose received after the age of six months.

In Addition to the Above:

All students entering the 7^thgrade must have had a TDaP booster after age 11 and at least one dose of the meningococcal vaccine. All students entering the 12^thgrade must have had the TDaP booster after age 11 and at least one dose of the meningococcal vaccine after the age of 16.

Tuberculosis testing is only required for students moving into West Virginia from another country.

Coca-Cola Gives

John Adams is teaming up with Coca-Cola to earn money in the Coca-Cola Givesprogram. Please support JAMS by dropping off the lids from participating Coke products below. Collection boxes will be in the office, at sporting events, and in grade-level classrooms.

New Dismissal Routine

Due to the new changes concerning start times for Kanawha County Schools, John Adams will be running on different times as well. Drop off will begin at 7:15. Please do not drop students off before this time as we will not have staff members available to monitor the students. We will send students to breakfast at 7:35, and then to class at 7:50. First period will start at 8:00. We will not have Dev. Guidance in the morning, so it is very important to be on time for school. School will end at 3:05. Bus riders will be dismissed first this year. Students can be picked up in the first circle after school starting at 3:11. As always, your patience and cooperation is needed. Changes may need to be implemented as the year progresses.
