JAMS will have a chess team again this year that will compete in the West Virginia Scholastic Chess League (WVSCL). The dates for league team play will be two Saturdays in January (dates TBD) with games starting at 9 AM and lasting until about 12-1 PM. Three games are played each day and take place at St. Francis of Assisi School in St. Albans. JA teams won 3rd and 4th place last year. There is also an individual tournament in February (day TBD) with 4-5 rounds and will last until 2-3 PM (JA students won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place). The WV Scholastic Chess State Championship will be in early March (JA teams won 1st and 4th place last year and two team members also won 2nd and 4th individually). It is the responsibility of each team member to have transportation to and from the tournaments. Teams can have three to five members in the early tournaments and up to 8 at the state championship. A school can have more than one team, so all that want to be on a team can be. There is also a National Chess Day Individual Tournament, Oct. 8 at St. Francis School in St. Albans. More details are at wvsca.com/events/
WVSCL games are rated by the US Chess Federation (USCF), which means that students will earn a rating for each tournament game they play. Participants will need to be USCF members (dues are $19 to $24/yr depending on age and whether an on-line or paper bimonthly Chess Life magazine subscription is selected) and includes discounts on chess supplies and books (see uschess.org). There is a WVSCL team fee of about $10/person to cover league tournament supplies, USCF rating fees, and tournament trophies for the January & February tournaments. The October and March tournaments are separate comparable fees.
